Eccentric

So I finally saw the Hunger Games movie last week, all the actors offered great performances, special mention to Jennifer Lawrence and the young Amanda Stenberg. But the one who really intrigued me was Elizabeth Banks eccentric character, Effie Trinket: her bizarre, almost disturbing behavior, and especially her look! I was fascinated by the extravagant almost clownesque costumes that reminded me of a fusion betweenVivienne Westwood and John Galliano collections.
Maybe when you see the movie you will, like I did, think of these fashion personalities and artists that demonstrate a sharp personal sense of style which elevate them to the status of fashion icon…

To watch: Albert Fallen

To finish the week end on a relaxing note, listen to the track “Time” by the Albert Fallen collectif.  Rachid Kake (voice, guitar, beat) and Arthur Badea (piano, synthesizer) both students and musicians, met at the Paris Nanterre University in 2010. They soon realize they share a mutual passion for alternative rock and pop music, but it’s the discovery of the Berlin minimalist electro music scene in 2011 that will be the source of the creation of the Albert Fallen project. The unique sound of Albert Fallen is the result of the mix of all these musical influences… Listen, enjoy, relax

The Coachella Festival which is taking place in Palm Springs started last week, but don’t worry the fun continues this week end! For those who are not familiar with the event, Coachella is the music and fashion destination by excellence since a few years. Luxury brands are now organizing pool or BBQ parties (Mulberry and Lacoste for the 2012 edition) where actors, fashion designers, artists can be spotted. However there is a certain dress code to respect to fit in the trendy crowd, and it’s not black tie or cocktail attire: think 70’s Woodstock new generation, hippie chic, bohemian, ethnic prints, effortless but stylish… Follow the trends below to get the Coachella look!

In the city that sees new venues opening everyday, The NoMad hotel is one of the latest hot spot in New York. Trendsetters and international crowd are already seduced by this new venue located in an imposing turn-of-the-century Beaux-Arts building in the NoMad district at 28th Street and Broadway. The hotel has been fully restored to its original grandeur with interiors by French designer Jacques Garcia. Inside, you can dine at the Parlour restaurant (plan to book a table a few days in advance) or just have a drink at the bar where you can enjoy delicious and sophisticated cocktails. Another reason to visit The NoMad is the highly expected opening of the French hype label, Maison Kitsune, first US boutique in the retail space of the hotel!

Minimalist meets Couture

Raf Simons (source GQ.com)

After several months of suspense the wait is finally over, WWD has announced that Raf Simons will join Christian Dior as the new Artistic Director for the Ready to Wear and Couture lines, and succeed to John Galliano.
Raf Simons was most recently designing for Jil Sander and has his own label. The choice is kind of surprising but definitely exciting! How does the minimalist, avant garde aesthetic of the Belgium designer will merge with the French house couture’s direction? Well until next Paris Fashion week, let your imagination guide you with these similar looks from the two brands, coincidence or predilection?

Girls, girls, girls

The cast of Girls: Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke

Have you heard about this new series, Girls, coming up on HBO? Now it’s everywhere in the press but I discovered it by watching an interview and behind the scenes shoot for vogue.com a few weeks ago, that you can see here.
Lena Dunham, creator and main character of the show, has quite an impressive resume for her young age (can’t believe she’s only 25!) : she started her cinematographic career in 2006, and most recently wrote, directed and played in the indie film “Tiny furnitures”in 2010. Girls promises to give us a fresh and realistic vision of four girlfriends in their early twenties trying to make it in New York while dealing with their love and professional lives. Let’s hope the show will be as good as we expect so we can finally find a decent successor to Sex and the City…

90’s kid

Versace ad campaign shot by Richard Avedon Spring 1994

In 1990 I was 10 years old, I was just a kid however I was already obsessed by fashion and photography. I was in admiration in front of Naomi, Cindy or Christy like a million of young girls (and boys!) secretly dreaming that someday I would like to be part of this world . It was the golden age of the super models phenomenon, a decade where true beauty and feminity were celebrated. Let’s look at these famous images that now belong to fashion history…

To watch: Michelle Dockery

Michelle Dockery is an English actress and singer best known for her role in the now classic PBS TV series “Downtown Abbey” telling the story of an English aristocrat family and their servants. This drama series takes place before and after the first war under the reign of king George V. Michelle Dockery plays Lady Mary Josephine Crawley the eldest daughter of the Downtown Abbey estate’s owner, Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham. Mary is impetuous, stubborn, spoiled but at times surprisingly vulnerable and sensitive giving her character a lot of complexity and charm. The sophisticated and distant beauty of the actress is addictive like the heroin she interprets, and I look forward to seeing her very soon in other roles. If you haven’t watched the show yet don’t waist any minute, the first season is available on Netflix.

Chanel

The SS12 Chanel’s ad campaign, shot by Karl Lagerfeld starring Joan Smalls and Saskia De Brauw, is one of the most beautiful of the season. The models, the photography, the scene are just dreamy. The essence of Chanel is so perfectly represented in an unexpected way: I love the grace of these two amazons gymnasts from another time moving with grace in a peaceful sea decor… I hope you like the images as much as I do!
