An afternoon in Brooklyn

My friend Marion visited for a couple of days, she wanted to discover this highly coveted area of New York. Our focus was Williamsburg famous for the hipster and artists community (think beards, skinny jeans and plaid shirts!), vintage stores, antiques shops, flea markets, cool bars, healthy awesome food restaurants or joints are really part of the life here…The little bonus of the day was to see actress Anne Hathaway (no picture sorry!) shopping in a little clothing boutique on Franklin street, in Greenpoint. Hope you enjoy this little tour, all the addresses will be at the end of the post, enjoy!

Vanessa

Vanessa Paradis is mostly known for being the French discreet but stylish girl, a longtime Chanel’s brand ambassador and of course the ex wife of Johnny Depp with whom she had two kids. But for me and most of European people, Vanessa is a symbol of a generation, a talented actress and singer we grew up with often bullied for her ballsy choices (In Noces Blanches she interpreted a disturbed young student who has a passionate affair with her teacher). Her Lolita style has evolved over the years depending on who she was working with, dating or sometimes both…My favorite period was when she released the album she made with Lenny Kravitz, simply called Vanessa Paradis. With Lenny’s influence she became this reincarnation of a 70’s bohemian baby doll but with the 90’s distinctive touch. After 6 years, Vanessa is releasing a new album which critics are already praising, the perfect occasion to pay her a little tribute!

Leelee looking amazing (again)

When it comes to style, some girls like Leelee Sobieski always get it right which is almost annoying… But in a good way. It forces you to be more creative with your wardrobe, for example you have this loose simple tee shirt in your closet since forever and never find something to wear it with? Just copy Leelee and pair it with an elegant evening skirt (the slit and  drape waist make the skirt here) plus killer pumps (no platforms please even if I love them) and here you are with a effortless stylish outfit that most of the girls will envy you!

When the bling was chic

Remember when Chanel and Versace were the kings of the bling? Statement jewelry was everywhere, from prestigious runway shows to ad campaigns, layering bold pieces was a must and never too much! After Rap stars, today stylish artists like Rihanna, Rita Ora or Lady Gaga and nostalgic fashion editors are giving a second life to the trend (see Daria Werbowy, Isabeli Fontana and Vogue Japan editorials below). Follow the inspiration, perfect timing for a party week end right?

Nadia!

I watched the movie adapted from the real life of  Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci when I was a kid, I remember how fascinated and intrigued I was, but through the years I forgot about her. She won 3 gold Olympic medals at the 1976’s games of Montreal and was the first gymnast to ever had a perfect score of 10. When I saw that CR Fashion book dedicating a story to her I couldn’t be happier! By the way if you like dance and dancers’s world, go and buy right away the magazine as it’s a special issue. The mix with high fashion is splendid, normal, it’s Carine.

Power to the Afro

It’s been a while since I wanted to use images from V Magazine’s beautiful editorial featuring my all time favorite model Joan Smalls (Beat Bolliger did the styling). She appears as a sensual version of activist and intellectual figure Angela Davis, the afro being the key detail. I was really inspired by this shoot. Much more than a hair style or a fashion trend like it is often perceived nowadays, in the 70’s context  having an afro was mostly about embracing who you are, your roots and revendicate your identity, even a political act sometimes. It’s definitely a vast and fascinating subject that I’ll be exploring hopefully very soon, stay tuned!
