Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2014
For the first time I attended the Lagos Fashion & Design week, sponsored by GT Bank, Fayrouz and Maybelline who also handled the make up and hair backstage. The designers I knew already did not deceived, and proved they were on their way to conquer the world like Tiffany Amber, Maki Oh, Lisa Folawiyo (previously known as Jewel by Lisa) or Lanre Da Silva. This group of designers respected and successful in Nigeria is also buzzing abroad: Tiffany Amber is probably not only the Nigerian but also the most known African designer whose collections have been shown in New York or Paris. Maki Oh after great reviews and features on style.com or Vogue online was part of the LVMH Prize contest finalists panel and invited among several emerging designers to the White House to meet the Fisrt Lady. As for Lisa Folawiyo and Lanre Da Silva, their clothing have been showcased respectively on renowned retail platforms such as Moda Operandi, and even the Dolce and Gabbana store in Milan. For the designers I discovered: Iconic Invanity, Tsemaye Binitie, Ituen Basi, Meena, Mai Ato all had very different worlds but nonetheless eye catching and for some of them, highly entertaining. Mai Ato had a killer drummer playing while the dandy models walked the runway, Ituen Basi presented a colourful, geeky, and joyful collection full of yellow buses and cars prints iconic of the crazy traffic in Lagos. Overall, this fashion week was a great opportunity to see several talents showing their work and just confirm that Africa is the next big thing in terms of fashion.
