Let’s talk about two shows I’ve been watching and loving, both shows have been created and produced by their lead actors, depicting an atypical vision of black America, and bringing a breeze of fresh air in TV’s landscape:
Atlanta, created, co produced and played by Donald Glover, FX.
The Plot: guys who are trying to succeed in the rap business in Atlanta. We follow the up and down adventures of Earn (Donald Glover) a young father struggling with small jobs and managing at the same time the burgeoning career of his cousin Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry).
Why you should watch Altlanta? For the unconventional script. Forget about the bling or the trashy lifestyle, here you get the real thing, you will get attached and can even relate to the characters whose scatty situations will make you sometimes laugh or feel emotional. The multi talented Donald Glover and also a rapper himself (aka Childish Gambino), explains the authenticity and candor of the narrative.
Insecure, created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, co produced and played by Issa Rae, HBO
The Plot: The professional and love life of two Afro American young women who happen to be best friends. The show focuses on Issa (Issa Rae), her unsatisfactory longtime relationship with boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis), and challenging job at a non profit organisation for middle school students of color. Her friend Molly (Yvonne Orji), is a successful associate in a law firm but struggles to find the right man.
Why you should watch Insecure? Because this was initially a mini web series called Akward black girl, Issa Rae character contradictions and energy is just addictive. Her funny faces, self talks when she stares at her mirror reflection and her rapping (the character Issa used to rap in high school) are hilarious. Kudos as well to Yvonne Orji playing Molly a sassy, at times sensitive or slightly neurotic gal longing for Mr Perfect.
While everybody else chose safe options like flower print, embroideries and other embellishments, Sienna took a bet on simplicity at the last Golden Globes ceremony and it worked! The white gown from Michael Kors, that requires perfect abs, made the British-American actress look flawless. The ponytail and black bow gave her this youthful 60’s look and the sober pearls jewellery added just enough glamour to the all ensemble. This is how you dedramatize a red carpet attire without forgetting to be chic! What about you, which look(s) did you liked at the Globes this year??
Chanel showed its 2016/17 Metiers d’Art Collection promoting luxury artisans skills, this season the theme was Cosmopolite. Privileged editors, clientele, celebrities and brand ambassadors gathered at the Ritz in Paris to see the models walking among (more…)
During Summer 1989 in Chicago, Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama had their first date. Actually it’s not a date, at least at the beginning, as Michelle’s character likes to say it in the movie. This could be the ordinary start of a love story except that these two without knowing it will make history by becoming the first black American presidential couple. But the movie focuses on the obvious interest of intern’s Barack in the smart junior lawyer Michelle and how he progressively wins her heart. Even if the awakening of their complicity and love is the main focus here, we can already sense the political potential and charisma of Obama and chemistry with Michelle. Tika Sumpter as Michelle Robinson gives a really good interpretation, not an easy thing knowing that they look nothing alike except maybe their stature, however the thumbs up goes to Parker Sawyers perfect in charming messy young Obama with a promising bright future. Overall the movie is a pleasant, romantic stroll through the black middle class neighborhoods of Chicago, tinted of nostalgia of a bygone era.
The little plus: the 80’s soundtrack, especially Janet Jackson’s hit “Miss you much” and Soul II Soul “Keep on Movin’”.
I am a long time fan of Beyonce, but for some reason I didn’t listened or watched Lemonade until 2 weeks ago. Despite my admiration for the artist, I was kind of over it: the drama around the alleged affair of husband’s Jay-Z, the girl power mantra… I knew the film was certainly very good knowing Beyonce is such a perfectionist, the problem is I thought I knew what to expect. Then I (more…)
Deeply sad to learn the death of Prince, the world has lost another genius. His influence was huge in terms of fashion, style and music, his art was timeless. Sincere condolences to his family, friends and worldwide fans.
I have found my new favourite show, it’s Vinyl on HBO. Like all the shows I loved before it’s the authenticity and complete immersion in an era that makes it special. The story takes place in a raunchy, underground 70’s New York: between rock (more…)
After the talented Frida Giannini, Alessandro Michele has been named Creative Director of Italian luxury house, Gucci. The brand is entering a new era exploring more of the 70’s baroque prints and embellishments, going complete opposite of the glamorous 70’s power woman we were used to. Here are 3 reasons to rediscover the iconic house:
Today’s Gucci girl is a romantic, an original, she’s playful and totally assume her quirkiness. The last Spring Summer Collection (SS16) is full of rich fabrics and bold mix of patterns with a strong vintage feel.
I can not help but picture 70’s style icons Ali Mc Graw, Bianca Jagger or Marisa Berenson wearing most of the pieces of the collection and notice how relevant the clothing are as they would have been 40 years ago!
With its beautiful bucolic illustrations and jewellery details, the Dionysus bag is fast becoming a must have as well as the fur loafers (for those who can afford it)! Just perfect for Christmas gift!!
The very anticipated collaboration between Balmain and H&M arrived in stores (worlwide) on November 5th. Embellishment, sequins, body conscious dresses, padded shoulders, the French luxury house lovers won’t be disappointed: Balmain went full on in incorporated its DNA into a rich yet affordable collection. After Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Marni or Lagerfeld just to name a few, H&M once again took the fashion world by storm and we can predict that the Balmain x H&M line key pieces will be a huge it!
This lovely black lace see through blouse and suede brown skirt seen on Margaret Zhang during NY fashion week. Miss Zhang, a favourite of mine when it comes to style, masters the combination of sexyness and the romantic aspect of this look with a touch of 70’s nostalgia. I will copy this asap!
Taraji P Henson was the cover girl for July’s W Magazine issue. Her black and white picture referencing Diana Ross circa 1980 where she posed in white tee and jeans for her hit album “Diana”. Two ways of being sexy at different times!
After nearly 20 years of career, Gisele Bundchen decided to retire from modelling. The mother of two married to professional quarterback,Tom Brady, wants to spend time with her family and work on other projects still related to fashion. Gisele is considered as one of the most emblematic figure of (more…)
2015 will be with no doubt Riri’s year, with her new album, R8, dropping any time now, a hit song with Paul Mc Cartney and Kanye West, a first single called BBHMM (Bitch better have my money) already getting everybody excited, the Barbadian beauty is making her big (more…)
The short hair are having a moment, many celebrities took the plunge and went pixie. The right inspiration for 2014 being Kate Moss, Revenge TV series actress Karine Vanasse or Mia Farrow’s cuts. Among my today’s favourite are Charlize Theron who is even sexier than before, Miley Cyrus for the girly punk attitude and the way she plays with her hair, and Lupita Nyong’o who breaks the routine by embellishing her style with strass headbands and other jewels. Even if we suspect a photoshop trick Brazilian top model Gisele Bundchen, famous for her beach blond look, went shorty for the last Balenciaga ad campaign. If you have always wanted to adopt short hair, now seems like the right time!
To continue the models celebration, the legendary Naomi Campbell turned 44 this month (yes, yes!) and despite the little faux pas of those last couple of years her empowering beauty and allure makes her, still, one of the favourite model of designers. She was lately on many covers of magazines (Interview, W magazine, V magazine, ELLE…), runways and as brand ambassador of power fashion houses (Roberto Cavalli, Versace…). Here a selection of some of her best recent editorials…
I rarely post about men, but lately I’ve been kind of obsessed with Jared Leto that’s why I chose him for this new category named Coup de Coeur. For those who don’t know him Jared is an American actor who played Claire Danes’s love interest in 90’s teen show, My so called life, and movies like Fight Club, Requiem for a dream, American Psycho just to name a few. Known for completely embracing his feminine side and being adventurous with his look, constantly reinventing himself almost like David Bowie and alter ego Ziggy Stardust, his physical transformation and performance for the Dallas Buyers Club film as a seropositive transgender earned him a nomination at the Oscars. Besides his successful acting career, he also created his own rock band with his brother called 30 seconds to Mars. Lately Jared Leto long locks and hypnotic blue eyes have been seen everywhere from NYFW front row shows to awards events. After a couple of quiet years, probably focusing on his music, the androgynous actor is back to the spotlights for our greatest pleasure!
